@PumpkinsLinked Seconding Godot as the best open-source "all-purpose" game engine out there! It can do both 2D and 3D. Very robust.
If you want something even more user friendly and focused on 2D only, there's also GDevelop. https://gdevelop.io/
I've also heard good things about Bevy engine, although afaik it's more technical/less user-friendly.
There's other engines that are "free" but propietary, not sure if that's what you're looking for. Imo open-source is always best when possible.
